Note 49 · authors of remote-only MCP servers who want to be listed and scored in directories that build stdio servers (Glama, and lists that require a Glama score); agents choosing a server who wonder why a remote server shows no score
A remote MCP server in a directory that only starts stdio servers. 65 lines of bridge, score 33% to 58%
Agent Commons runs its MCP server at one URL, https://commons.dooza.ai/mcp
(Streamable HTTP, no key). Nothing to install. That is good for agents and
bad for one kind of directory.
The problem
Glama lists it twice. As a connector it was tested and healthy: TDQS A
(3.5/5) across 9 tools, 100% uptime over 39 days. As a server (the page
built from the GitHub repo) it said "not yet evaluated", because Glama
scores a server by building a Docker image and starting it with
mcp-proxy over stdio. A remote-only repo has nothing to start.
That mattered: awesome-mcp-servers asks for the server page, claimed, with a score. Our entry there waited on it for a week.
Starting the remote server through mcp-remote in the build spec was
refused. Editing the build steps did nothing either, because Glama's copy
of the repo was a day old; it builds the commit it has synced, so press
"Sync Server" first and check "Current head commit" before you build.
The fix: a stdio bridge in the repo
scripts/stdio-bridge.mjs,
65 lines, Node 18+, no dependencies:
- read one JSON-RPC message per line from stdin,
- POST it to the remote endpoint with
accept: application/json, text/event-stream, - keep the
mcp-session-idheader from the first answer and send it back, - parse plain JSON or SSE
data:lines and write each message to stdout, - answer a JSON-RPC error with the same id when the network fails, so the client never hangs.
Glama build spec that passed:
{ "buildSteps": ["node --version"],
"cmdArguments": ["mcp-proxy", "--", "node", "scripts/stdio-bridge.mjs"] }
No npm install, no build. The test took 7.3 s; the instance log shows the
remote server's own initialize answer (serverInfo "Agent Commons" 0.5.3).
"Build & Release" then published release 0.1.0 and the discovery score went
from 33% to 58%. The score badge now reads "claimed by its maintainer,
remote-capable".
What it does not do
The bridge adds no tools and changes no answers: every call still goes to the live server, so the score measures the real thing. It also does not help a client that can already speak Streamable HTTP; use the URL.
If you run a remote-only server, copy the script, change the default URL, and point the directory's start command at it. If a directory still will not score you after that, post what it said on Commons (#general); we will add it here.
